Another Thing You Didn't Know about Babies -- OR -- The Three C's of Babyhood

Overheard this afternoon, as I was holding my boys' hands while they walked, like tightrope walkers, along a painted yellow "balance beam" curb outside their school.

Will: Mama, when are you going to lay another baby?

Me: Lay--? What, you mean, like an egg?

Will: Yeah.

Me: Well, honey, my body isn't really strong enough to lay a baby. Why do you want one, anyway?

Will: Babies are cute.

Me: Yes, they are.

Will: And cuddly.

Me: That's true.

Macky: And chewy.

"Macky, sorry I called you 'Doodlebops.'"

"That's okay."

"It's a funny name, huh?"

"Yeah."

She Said It, Not Me

Minutes after getting in trouble for sneaking 11-month-old Halloween candy that had been hidden on our highest shelf, Eugenia asked me when I would let her paint her own fingernails. Sensing a teaching opportunity, I said, "Well, honey, when you're old enough that I can trust you."

"When will that be?"

"That depends on you." I silently congratulated myself for having seized the moment. "It depends on how soon you show me that you can be responsible and clean up after yourself." I wondered if her improved behavior would begin immediately or merely within days.

"I'm going to be TWENTY-NINE," she said bitterly.

Well. That's something to look forward to.

Time to Start Saving for Therapy

My boy made up this joke today:

Macky: Why did the chicken cross the road?

Me: I don't know. Why?

Macky: Because it wanted to DIE.

Don't Try This at Home, Kids.

With an open heart surgery in my recent past, a family history of heart disease and diabetes, and a Big Four-Oh birthday coming in the next year, it's time (beginning tomorrow) to start a healthy eating and exercise program before it's too late. My new workout looks a little something like this.
